Better systems use belly straps that run underneath the vehicle, creating downward tension that resists updrafts. The best designs incorporate both perimeter anchoring and under-vehicle straps, staying secured in winds of approximately 70 mph.
Deployment speed varies dramatically. Simple throw-over covers typically take 3-5 minutes to position and secure. Inflatable car tents typically require 8-12 minutes for setup, inflation, and anchoring—pushing the limits of typical warning windows. Practice installation on a calm day; fumbling with unfamiliar straps while hail approaches guarantees mistakes.
Material composition determines impact resistance. Multi-layer covers with EVA foam cores absorb more energy than single-layer fabric. Premium covers with 10mm+ padding can typically protect against hailstones up to about golf-ball size, though no portable cover reliably stops baseball-sized hail. The physics simply don't work—kinetic energy at that scale overwhelms fabric-based systems.
Storage location matters as much as the cover itself. Keeping it in your garage helps nothing when you're downtown. Trunk storage means you can deploy anywhere, but reduces cargo space year-round.
